Arsenal return to Premier League top 4

Leandro Trossard’s sole goal helped Arsenal beat Everton 1-0 away in the Premier League round 5 on September 17th, returning them to fourth place.

Playing away against bottom-side Everton, Arsenal controlled the ball 75% of the time. The visitors struggled to break down Everton’s packed defense before substitute Trossard scored the winner in the 69th minute.

Trossard’s goal rescued Arsenal on an unlucky day. The Gunners should have opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Gabriel Martinelli slotted into the far corner past Jordan Pickford. But the goal was disallowed because Eddie Nketiah was offside in the buildup. Less than five minutes later, Martinelli was injured and had to be replaced by Trossard.

Everton had to wait until round four to earn their first point. The hosts made no secret of their intention to grab another point against last season’s runners-up. Defensive, Everton barely troubled David Raya, Arsenal’s new goalkeeper, throughout the match. The Toffees’ highlights were long-range primary shots.

Arsenal return to Premier League top 4

Last season, Arsenal lost at Goodison Park when Mikel Arteta’s men were in great form. In the return fixture, the visitors struggled again as Fabio Vieira, Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard could not get the better of Everton’s midfield trio Amadou Onana, Idrissa Gueye and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

It took Trossard’s tricky finish from Bukayo Saka’s cutback in the box for Arsenal to grind out the three points. For the first time since December 2021, Arsenal’s substitutes scored in three consecutive games. Earlier, Nketiah netted against Fulham and Gabriel Jesus sealed the win over Man Utd.

The first win at Everton since 2017 lifted Arsenal back into the top four with 13 points, behind Man City, Tottenham, and Liverpool who all came from behind to win this round. Everton recorded their fourth straight goalless draw, sitting 18th with just one point.

Arsenal will host PSV in their Champions League opener midweek before facing local rival Tottenham at Emirates. Everton will travel to Brentford next.
