Jurgen Klopp’s team had an impressive performance to bring their arch-rivals, the Red Devils, back down to earth after a string of victories.

True to the nature of an English derby, both Liverpool and Manchester United were cautious at the start. Klopp’s team had the advantage of playing at home, and controlled the game in the opening minutes, while the Red Devils played defensively and waited for a chance to counter-attack.

Liverpool created constant pressure with their wing attacks from Robertson and Salah, but both the Egyptian forward and his teammates, such as Nunez and Elliott, missed opportunities to score.

After enduring about 20 minutes of pressure, Manchester United began to rise strongly. In the 26th minute, Bruno Fernandes had a close-range header opportunity, but unfortunately, the ball went wide of the post. Just a minute later, Shaw’s intelligent long pass between two Liverpool defenders created a chance for Rashford, but his shot was not enough to beat Alisson.

In the 41st minute, Manchester United was the first team to score with a well-executed free-kick routine by Bruno. Casemiro headed the ball into Alisson’s net, but he and his two teammates were caught offside before the goal was disallowed.

Immediately, the home team responded. In the 43rd minute, Robertson’s clever pass split Manchester United’s defense, Gakpo then turned the ball past Varane before firing past De Gea to open the scoring for Liverpool.

In the second half, Nunez and Gakpo extended Liverpool’s lead to three goals in the 47th and 50th minutes, respectively. Both goals came from the right wing with the explosive pace of Salah, who then scored a goal himself.

In the 66th minute, substitute McTominay made a mistake when trying to block Nunez’s first pass, but the ball bounced back to the same position. The Uruguayan striker then passed to Salah, who scored a brilliant goal past De Gea.

A four-goal difference was too much for Manchester United to overcome, but Liverpool still seemed unsatisfied. In the last 15 minutes, Nunez and Salah both scored again to complete their individual doubles.

In the 88th minute, substitute Firmino scored the final goal to seal Liverpool’s 7-0 victory. This crazy result lifted Liverpool to 5th place, only three points behind Tottenham, but with one game in hand. As for Manchester United, this loss ended their 11-game unbeaten streak and increased their gap with the league leaders Arsenal to 14 points.

Key players of the away team such as Bruno Fernandes, David De Gea, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, and Marcus Rashford all disappointed in this match. Man Utd will need to quickly regroup and find their unbeaten streak again if they don’t want to face the risk of dropping out of the top 4.

They are currently in third place, but only four points ahead of Tottenham and seven points ahead of Liverpool. Their next opponent is Real Betis at Old Trafford in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16.
