Manchester United had a difficult match at home against bottom team Southampton in Matchweek 27 of the 2022/23 Premier League.

On the evening of March 12th, Manchester United played in Matchweek 27 of the Premier League at home against the team at the bottom of the table, Southampton.

With the advantage of playing at home and enthusiastic support from the home fans, it was not difficult for the Red Devils to dominate the game from the first few minutes, with several good chances missed by Marcus Rashford and Varane.

However, while they were focused on attacking, MU suddenly had to play with one player less in the 31st minute. Midfielder Casemiro made a rough tackle on Carlos Alcaraz and after checking VAR technology, referee Anthony Taylor immediately showed a red card to the Brazilian player.

Playing with 10 men, MU had to concede control of the game to their opponents for the rest of the first half. However, Southampton’s pressure was not enough to break through goalkeeper De Gea’s net.

In the second half, Southampton did not hide their intention to attack MU’s half to score. However, the unlucky finishing of Theo Walcott and Kyle Walker-Peters made their chances go to waste.

Meanwhile, despite having to give up control of the game to the visitors and play with one player less, Erik ten Hag’s team still had some dangerous chances. If luck had been on their side, Bruno Fernandes would have scored the opening goal after his long shot hit the post in the 54th minute. As a result, Manchester United had to settle for a disappointing draw against the bottom team.

Two teams played a back-and-forth match and created several chances for each other’s goal, but no goals were scored in the second half, resulting in a 0-0 draw between Manchester United and Southampton. Despite the draw, Manchester United remains in third place in the Premier League standings, although they are now 16 points behind the league leaders, Arsenal.

Southampton’s point at Old Trafford will surely boost their confidence in their fight to avoid relegation this season. However, the red card shown to Casemiro during the match poses a significant challenge for Manchester United’s head coach, Ten Hag, who will now be without his most important player for four matches.

This loss includes the FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham on March 19th, and three Premier League matches against Newcastle, Brentford, and Everton.

Manchester United has struggled in the past when Casemiro was unavailable due to a previous red card and suspension, so Ten Hag will need to make accurate personnel calculations to fill the gap left by the Brazilian midfielder.

Furthermore, Casemiro will be suspended from the Europa League if he receives another yellow card in the competition. Currently, Manchester United has one foot in the quarter-finals after a 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the first leg of the Round of 16.
